October 1, 2019 marked the
70th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
On that day, they held the largest military parade and pageant in Chinese history. During the weeks leading up to the national holiday, government workers were being mobilized to clean, decorate, police, and maintain streets to a heightened degree. As you walk down busy streets, you find people hanging flags outside their homes, performing in street shows, visiting local landmarks and pop-up events. Downtown streets bustled with patriotism and pageantry. But as you make your way deeper into the veins of the city, down long hidden streets, you come to find something different. And it becomes apparent that this is a celebration that not everyone has the luxury of celebrating.
