Meet The Crams
In 2014 my mom was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, which is a progressive disease that affects the brain, resulting in slow degeneration, and in her case, additionally Dementia. In the early stages of the diagnosis, I was feeling really overwhelmed and needed some way to process the news. My mom and I have always been very close, so I decided to start photographing her and my Dad.
Over the last 8+ years we have collaborated together.
If you’re familiar with the disease you’ll likely know how much they will sleep throughout the day due to the medication, that over time their dexterity deteriorates and simple tasks like tying shoes, putting on a bra, or even showering oneself becomes extremely challenging. And in the later stages, when dementia settles in, they struggle with cognitive tasks like reading a book, putting a full sentence together or with short term memory.
As well as capturing my Mom’s experience with Parkinson’s Disease, I also wanted to capture my parents' struggle dealing with the changes together over time, and even more so, the unconditional love they showed one another. I thought it was important to include the good days filled with travel, joy, and togetherness, but also days of frustration, fear and loneliness.
This body of work is a love letter to my mom and an archive of moments I’ve come to cherish. I hope that you see all the beauty and love that she continues to bring me and everyone that knows her. She’s still thriving and making the most of every day! And in turn, we are too.
