Between Steel & Silica

After graduating school, I spent my days walking to and from work. I was lucky, privileged even, to have a job working at a tech company that paid okay, and provided perks like meals and wine on tap. I spent all day in that hazy tech bubble, and then would leave and find myself walking through the real world.

Not 100 steps from the door was an encampment under the freeway. Over a few months I made friends with Patrick and Danny, who lived in that encampment. Patrick had two rats named Lucille and Roxanne, which he named after “rock and roll” songs.

But besides the occasional plates of food I brought them, or the USB drive I filled with music, there was not much I felt I could do to help them. One day I arrived at work to find all their stuff gone.

I never saw them again.

I spent the following two years trying to make sense of the dichotomy between these two worlds I shared. I couldn’t help but try to hold onto the world outside of work. I wanted to immerse myself, to hold on tight to keep from drifting away into that hazy bubble.
